My Greatest Fear: Becoming Unhoused and Dying Alone on the Streets

ISSUE #74 - The Choices We Make Are Always a Response to Fear
Actually, that used to be my second greatest fear. For many years, my greatest fear was going to prison.
Let me explain.
In the 90’s, I spend six months working as a doctor in a California State Prison system medium security medical/hospital facility. While I got to go home each night to a rented bedroom in a nearby home I shared with another physician who was also on the same temporary assignment, the sound of metal gates and the constant din of prison chatter, not to mention the violence I witnessed while there, made a lasting impact.
It also increased my compassion for those suffering behind bars. Despite how it’s portrayed on television, prison life is sad; often absent of hope and fully of violence and despair. I saw how people who made bad split-second decisions ruined the rest of their lives.
The experiences I had there, and the memories of events I wish I hadn’t, have never left me.
Everywhere I go, I see masses of unhoused people living in tents near freeways and even on urban sidewalks. It’s a global problem and not just an American one. I often wonder what choices each made ultimately resulted in their unhoused status.
I suspect fear played a role. I believe the majority of our daily choices are driven by fear.
fear of the Coronavirus drove the choice to vaccinate ourselves
fear of contracting polio, measles, mumps, and rubella drove the decisions of parents to immunize their children.
fear of success holds us back from putting in the work necessary to realize it
The fear of success is just as powerful
Failure can become so familiar that it feels unsettling when we experience success.
People often fail to start a project, hold back, delay, or just watch from the sidelines because they fear succeeding. Success is such a foreign concept that they usually find a way to self-sabotage their efforts.
I want to help you kick the fear of failure to the curb
That’s why I’m here on Substack. To help.
Isn’t it time you stopped letting the familiarity of failure drive your fear of success?
