I used to treat myself to first-class flights on occasion.
At first, it was a novelty, then something happened.
I got used to it.
I was soon accustomed to the extra legroom, service, and the prestige of the first-class experience.
Then, I was laid off and had to fund my travel for business, and things changed.
I reverted to flying Southwest Airlines—aptly nicknamed ‘the cattle car of the skies’—but I missed the legroom, service, and priority boarding with guaranteed overhead storage space. 🙄
The airs are different in the first-class cabin
Not the actual air we breathe; it’s the same recycled air that everyone else on the plane breathes.
I’m talking about airs; first-class passengers have a certain air or aura associated with them.
They behave differently
Most are quiet and keep to themselves
I’ve never seen a YouTube video of a Karen/Kevin being removed from the first-class cabin 🥸
Airs have the power to attract or repel
Now that I’m quasi-retired, I fondly view the first-class passengers when I board a plane. I remember what it was like, and I smile.
Those who’ve never treated themselves to a first-class fare likely perceive the first-class passengers as people with money…money they wish they had so they didn’t have to drag their squeaky-wheeled luggage to row 33…conveniently located near the restroom. 🚽
Here’s the thing about these ‘airs…’
Airs aren’t authentic - as an observer, we create them.
What kind of ‘airs’ do your Substack readers perceive?
HINT: It’s directly responsive to your messaging style.
Value-based ‘how-to’ and ‘this is what you should do’ messaging creates an air of assumed authority; however, value-based writing usually alienates more than it inspires.
Yes, authoritative posts have a place; they’re just not going to attract new subscribers with money to spend.
That requires a different approach.
