PREVIEW: Adding $2K-$5K To My Monthly Income by Extending My Next-Step Offer
Are You Interested in Developing Your Next-Step Offer?
“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
That infamous line, uttered by Marlon Brando, then 47, in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 blockbuster film The Godfather, became instantly synonymous with sketchy offers of all kinds.
Of course, not all offers are shady or as violent as Don Corleone’s turned out to be. 🐴
However, one thing remains true.
Don Corleone knew how to make a strong offer. 😳
How Paid Subscribers Led to My‘‘Next-Step Offe’’
It was a big moment when I finally started attracting paying subscribers. It was like shattering the frosted glass placed around my identity and finally letting my readers begin to see the real me.
In my experience, you can’t fake authenticity; you have to discover it through making mistakes and, ultimately, surrender.
After 18 months and five previous Substack publications, which taught me how to fail in public, I let go of my curated persona—the former doctor turned writer.
No one cared anyway, not even me. That led me to a relatively high precipice (metaphorically speaking).
I peered over the edge and then jumped. 😬
“F*ck it, I’ll just be my awkward, 66 year-old retired self who occasionally drops carefully disguised F-bombs when he writes.”
That’s when the tide shifted. (Wait, do tides shift? 🌊 Or is that the wind?💨)
Whatever, here are two examples of my awkward self-ness:
I recently posted a pretty crappy video clip in Notes announcing my intention to increase my annual Pro Level subscription by $10 on August 1. It was my first video, and you can see that it left much to be desired.
Then my most recent podcast episode sounded more like a““…Christopher Walken ...impersonation …replete with...pregnant ...pauses....like the one you're hearing …in ya head... right naaoow””
In the span of a few days following each of these isolated events, more brave and wonderful beings became Pro Level subscribers.
I assume, as a Substack writer, you treasure yours, too. And you should because, well, they’re like gold. Most paid subscribers will be happy to remain one for a long time, and that’s wonderful! They’re like gold. We’ll do everything we can to make sure they know it.
They Deserve a Next-Step Offer
A few Pro Level members mentioned wanting to build a business with revenue in addition to that generated by paid members.
Since I’m already doing this, I decided to package it and create a Next-Step Offer for them. My NSO is called Beyond The Subscription.
A few paid subscribers (now your clients) will have their eyes on something larger; they want to launch something more significant, and you should not only anticipate this but be prepared to assist.
That’s where your Next-Step Offer (NSO) comes into play.
When a client desires a higher goal, it’s our duty to assist. Your Next-Step Offer becomes how you can help your reader reach their goals.
Some years back, when I was training under some marketing folks, I found it interesting that one of the definitions of the term consultant is “to guide, care for, and protect one’s client.”
Your NSO won’t be a good match for everyone, but for serious students who want to make a more significant impact, it’s the perfect way to ‘‘guide, care, and protect’’ your client and add $2K —$5K in monthly revenue.
